A Phonetic Model of English Intonation
نویسنده
چکیده
This thesis proposes a phonetic model of English intonation which is a system for linking the phonological and F0 descriptions of an utterance. It is argued that such a model should take the form of a rigorously defined formal system which does not require any human intuition or expertise to operate. It is also argued that this model should be capable of both analysis (F0 to phonology) and synthesis (phonology to F0). Existing phonetic models are reviewed and it is shown that none meet the specification for the type of formal model required. A new phonetic model is presented that has three levels of description: the F0 level, the intermediate level and the phonological level. The intermediate level uses the three basic elements of rise, fall and connection to model F0 contours. A mathematical equation is specified for each of these elements so that a continuous F0 contour can be created from a sequence of elements. The phonological system uses H and L to describe high and low pitch accents, C to describe connection elements and B to describe the rises that occur at phrase boundaries. A fully specified grammar is described which links the intermediate and F0 levels. A grammar is specified for linking the phonological and intermediate levels, but this is only partly complete due to problems with the phonological level of description. A computer implementation of the model is described. Most of the implementation work concentrated on the relationship between the intermediate level and the F0 level. Results are given showing that the computer analysis system labels F0 contours quite accurately, but is significantly worse than a human labeller. It is shown that the synthesis system produces artificial F0 contours that are very similar to naturally occurring F0 contours. The thesis concludes with some indications of further work and ideas on how the computer implementation of the model could be of practical benefit in speech synthesis and recognition.

Intonational variation in Liverpool English
This paper investigates intonational variation in Liverpool English, a dialect of British English that is recognised as having a number of distinctive phonetic characteristics [15, 16]. One previously reported aspect of Liverpool intonation is the presence of rising contours in declaratives as part of the traditional dialect [7]. Here we present a phonological Autosegmental Metrical analysis [9...
متن کاملTone choice in the English intonation of proficient non-native speakers
An experiment is reported in which twelve Finnish test subjects, first-year university students of English, acted a pre-written conversational dialogue representing colloquial English. To obtain baseline data, twelve native speakers of English were recruited to act the same dialogue. The speech data was investigated acoustically in terms of f0. Most of the Finnish test subjects could make, both...
متن کاملModeling and synthesis of English regional accents with pitch and duration correlates
This paper provides an introduction to the acoustic–phonetic structure of English regional accents and presents a signal processing method for the modeling and transformation of the acoustic correlates of English accents for example from British English to American English. The focus of this paper is on the modeling of intonation and duration correlates of accents as the modeling of formants is...
متن کاملIncreasing context: L2 production of English intonation by L1 Mandarin and L1 Spanish speakers
One of the uncontested linguistic uses of intonation is the marking of sentence-type. Intonation, however, can be a redundant cue to sentence type, as in English statements or absolute yes-no questions, or the only cue, as in declarative questions. We explore the realization of sentence prosody by advanced Spanish and Mandarin learners of English. Since the target-like realization of sentence p...
متن کاملAcquisition of second language intonation
Foreign accents in second language (L2) production are caused by interference from the phonological system and phonetic realization of the speaker’s first language (L1), including both segmental and prosodic features. This paper examines the intonation structure of Seoul Korean and its realization by American English speakers. Four English speakers of Korean, differing in fluency, and two Korea...
متن کاملPerception of English intonation by English, Spanish, and Chinese listeners.
Native language affects the perception of segmental phonetic structure, of stress, and of semantic and pragmatic effects of intonation. Similarly, native language might influence the perception of similarities and differences among intonation contours. To test this hypothesis, a cross-language experiment was conducted. An English utterance was resynthesized with seven falling and four rising in...
